500kV Thai Binh Substation Project – In the context of rapidly increasing electricity consumption in the key economic regions of Northern Vietnam, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) officially commenced the construction of the 500kV Thai Binh Substation and Connection Lines Project on July 8, 2025, in Than Khe Commune, Hung Yen Province. This is an urgent power transmission project, mandated by the Prime Minister to be completed within 2025 to ensure energy security for the Red River Delta region.
1. Scope of the 500kV Thai Binh Substation Project
The project comprises two main components:
- 500kV Thai Binh Substation: Located in Than Khe Commune, Hung Yen Province (formerly Bac Son Commune, Hung Ha District, old Thai Binh), with a designed capacity of 600MVA and a reserved position for a second transformer.
- Connection Line System:
- A 500kV double-circuit transmission line, approximately 1.71 km long, connecting the substation to the existing 500kV Nam Dinh I Thermal Power Plant – Pho Noi line.
- 220kV four-circuit and two-circuit transmission lines, totaling over 6 km in length, connecting to the existing 220kV Thai Binh – Kim Dong line.
2. Strategic Role of the Project for the Power Transmission System
According to EVNNPT, the project carries strategic significance within the overall development of the national power system:
- Ensuring safe and stable electricity supply for Hung Yen, Ninh Binh provinces, and surrounding areas.
- Reducing the load on existing 500kV substations, especially during peak consumption seasons.
- Strengthening grid connections in the Northern region, ensuring flexibility in dispatching and operation.
- Reducing power and energy losses, enhancing the operational efficiency of the transmission grid.
- Preparing infrastructure to welcome new power sources, such as gas power, wind power, and solar power in the Northern coastal area. – 500kV Thai Binh Substation Project
3. Construction Progress: Determined to Complete in 2025
The Northern Power Project Management Board (NPMB) reported that land clearance has been largely completed. Construction units are committed to mobilizing maximum equipment, personnel, and reasonable construction organization plans to ensure completion on schedule.
- Investor: National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT)
- Management & Operation: Northern Power Project Management Board (NPMB)
- Operating Unit: Power Transmission Company 1
4. Opportunities for Modern High-Voltage Equipment Solutions
The development of 220-500kV substations and transmission lines creates a significant demand for high-voltage switchgear, digital protective relay systems, intelligent measurement and control equipment, and smart substation solutions. 500kV Thai Binh Substation Project
Leading solution providers in the power system sector, with strengths in medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment, SCADA, digital protective relays, GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear), and outdoor switchgear, are ready to collaborate with EVNNPT’s key transmission projects and regional power transmission units.
5. 500kV Thai Binh Substation Project – A Strategic Step for Northern Power Transmission
With a clear, long-term vision and unwavering determination, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) is proactively shaping Vietnam’s energy future, particularly in its rapidly developing economic hubs. The recent commencement of the 500kV Thai Binh Substation and Connection Lines project stands as a monumental testament to this commitment, strategically addressing the escalating power demands in the critical Northern Vietnam region, especially the Red River Delta. Mandated by the Prime Minister for urgent completion within 2025, this pivotal undertaking is far more than just infrastructure development; it’s a foundational pillar in fortifying the nation’s energy security.
Its successful realization will bring multifaceted benefits: significantly reducing the operational load on existing 500kV substations, enhancing overall grid connectivity, and boosting operational flexibility for seamless power dispatch. Furthermore, the project is engineered to drastically minimize power and energy losses across the transmission network. Crucially, it represents a strategic foresight, acting as a vital component within the comprehensive Power Master Plan VIII. By preparing the grid to seamlessly integrate future renewable and clean energy sources like gas power, wind, and solar from the coastal areas, EVNNPT is not only securing present energy needs but also laying robust groundwork for Vietnam’s sustainable economic growth and a stable, modern energy landscape for decades to come. This project underscores EVNNPT’s dedication to a resilient, efficient, and future-ready power transmission infrastructure.
